One Week Sessions (for first year campers only)

For first time campers, Camp Ton-A-Wandah is offering a one-week starter session as a beginning option to our traditional two and three week camp program.

This one-week program is designed especially for first-time campers ages 5-10 (rising K - 5th grade).  This option is perfect for those new to the world of summer camps who want to "dip their toes before they dive in." The starter session offers a fantastic opportunity for your camper to experience the spirit of TAW and fully integrate into camp life alongside our two and three-week campers!  

Limited to a small group of campers, your camper will receive a personalized introduction to our most popular and traditional camp activities: archery, canoeing, riflery, horseback riding, arts and crafts, land sports, rock climbing, swimming and more.  Depending on her age, she will either follow a pre-set schedule or choose her own activities alongside her cabin mates. She'll also participate in our evening programs and be initiated into a team, preparing her for future camp experiences.  This shorter session provides just the right amount of time to experience the magic of Ton-A-Wandah.  And if she falls in love with camp and wants to stay longer, we can arrange for her to extend her stay!

Two Week Sessions (for first year campers or campers returning from Starter Session)

For first time campers or those returning from Starter session, Camp Ton-A-Wandah offers a two week session as a shorter option to our traditional three week camp program. In just two weeks, your camper will dive into the full Camp Ton-A-Wandah experience, exploring all that TAW has to offer.  She'll be initiated into a team, participate in our unique Evening Programs and even enjoy out of camp trips. This session provides a comprehensive taste of camp life, giving her the chance to fully immerse herself in the adventure and camaraderie of TAW.  Plus, if she's loving her time at camp, she'll have the option to stay for a third week! 

Three Week Sessions (our traditional camp program)

Our traditional three-week session is designed to give your camper the full Ton-A-Wandah experience. Enrolling in this three-week session means she will have ample time to explore all that TAW has to offer, from daily activities to the deeper bonds of camp life.  While the first two weeks introduce her to camp's diverse offerings, the final week is truly special, focusing on team unity and celebrating her growth.  Signature events like Fire Games, Honor Assembly and Candlelight allow campers to showcase the skills they've honed, reflecting on their journey and embracing the cherished traditions that make TAW unforgettable.  This final week encapsulates the spirit of TAW, leaving campers with lasting memories and a desire to "Return Once More".

Leaders In Training (LITs)

TAW offers an LIT program (formerly known as CIT), for rising junior and senior girls.  A different program is offered each session which is always a combination of participating in traditional camp activities, focused leadership development, practicing camp counselor skills, and forming a strong bond within our leadership cabin.  These different focuses include: Service in Ecuador, Camp Deep Dive, Adventure.  

No matter if you are a long-time camper or new to Ton-A-Wandah,  the LIT Program offers a fantastic opportunity for those interested in developing their skills as leaders and role models. What better way to do that than at camp with other open-minded individuals!

Activity Lead Coordinators

Camp TAW’s Activity Lead Coordinators report to the Activity Director and oversee the running of a specific set of activities. These coordinators do not live in cabins with campers, are typically 21 years of age, and have the ability to drive.  Activity Lead Coordinators must have experience in the areas they are leading.  They are responsible for camper engagement in activities, providing feedback to staff in their areas, activity skill progression, and communicating and evaluating equipment needs specific to their area. The Activity Lead Coordinators are responsible for evaluating the staff in their activity areas and managing paperwork such as skills verifications and inventories. In addition to activity duties detailed above, each Activity Lead Coordinator is assigned to a Cabin Area to provide support to campers, counselors, and programs during times when activity programs are not operating. These coordinators will be responsible for leading and/or participating in their activity area during Activity Training conducted throughout Training Week .They should be comfortable with public speaking.

Arts and Crafts Coordinator

Camp TAW’s Arts & Crafts Coordinator oversees the art & crafts classes; she will manage basic and advanced arts and crafts class, basic metal smithing, glass fusion, pottery, painting, and beading.  This coordinator will need to have suitable knowledge of (or the ability to learn) the craft supplies and tools required for these classes and be comfortable managing lesson planning for an arts program across skill levels. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan the training curriculum for these activities.

Performing Arts Coordinator 

This coordinator will be responsible for the activities that will perform their routines in the Dance and Drama Review and Talent Show at the end of each camp session. She, along with the Programs Coordinator, will work together to ensure both campers and counselors can showcase their talents in a wide variety of classes. A background in the performing arts is preferred as she will be overseeing and supporting Camp TAW’s dance, drama (including the play), music, gymnastics, and cheer classes. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan her activity training curriculum for these activities.  

Rocks and Ropes Coordinator

Camp TAW’s Rocks and Ropes coordinator is responsible for the daily operations and safety of both the high ropes course and rock climbing program, as well as the management of the rocks and ropes team. This Coordinator plays a direct role in reviewing equipment needs, setting-up and taking down courses, and the overall safety review of the program. Unique to this position, this coordinator, along with her team, will undergo training from a 3rd party vendor to ensure compliance with the safety operations for both Camp TAW’s Ropes Course and Rock Climbing program. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan her activity training curriculum for these activities. Lastly, she is responsible for running the Rock Climbing Team Event for Camp TAW’s Fire Games on the last day of camp each session, including any necessary practices for this event.  Previous experience in either rock climbing or ropes course operation is required for this position.

Target Sports Coordinator 

Camp TAW’s Target Sports Coordinator is responsible for the daily operations, safety, and the management of the archery and riflery program. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan her activity training curriculum for these activities. Unique to this position, this coordinator, along with her team, will undergo training from a 3rd party vendor to ensure compliance with the safety operations for both Camp TAW’s archery and riflery program. Lastly, she is responsible for running the Archery and Riflery Team Event for Camp TAW’s Fire Games on the last day of camp each session and necessary practices for this event. Previous experience in either Archery or Riflery is required for this position.

Landsports Coordinator  

This coordinator will be responsible for the activities that fall under Camp TAW’s Land Sports Program: basketball, volleyball, tennis, and international sports (if applicable). While an exact knowledge of each sport is not required for this role, this coordinator should be willing and able to learn more about each sport under her management, able to effectively navigate their needs, be present during these activities, and be able to evaluate both camper and counselor engagement specific to these skillsets .This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she will be expected to plan her activity training curriculum for these activities. Lastly, she along with Camp TAW’s Leadership Coordinator is responsible for running and refereeing the Sport Competition Events and practices during the second week of camp: the Volleyball and Basketball Competition. Further, she is responsible for managing the practices for these events.  

Miscellaneous Coordinator 

This coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and managing Camp TAW’s miscellaneous classes including: community service, games, secret agent, photo newsletter, knitting, sewing, cooking, group games, and woodburning. These classes, while encompassing a wide range of skill sets, are some of Camp TAW’s favorite pastimes. While an exact activity skill is not required for this role, this coordinator should be keen to learn more about the activities under her management, able to effectively navigate their needs, be present during these activities, and be able to evaluate camper and staff engagement. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan and execute her activity training curriculum for these activities.

Boating Coordinator 

Camp TAW’s Boating Coordinator is responsible for the daily operations, safety, and the management of the canoeing, paddleboarding and kayaking program. Additionally, she will be responsible for the execution and operation of the Advanced Kayaking trip which typically occurs the last week of each session. While no certifications are required for this position, it is preferred that this coordinator have (or would be willing to acquire) a Lifeguarding Certification and a Swiftwater Rescue certification. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan her activity training curriculum for these activities. Lastly, she, in collaboration with Camp TAW’s Waterfront Director, is responsible for assisting with Camp TAW’s Canoe Meet and canoe practices as necessary for this event.

Fitness Coordinator 

This coordinator will be responsible for the activities that fall under Camp TAW’s Fitness Program: zumba, yoga, boxing, pilates, and cardio/running. While not required, certain fitness classes may participate in Camp TAW’s Dance and Drama Review and Talent Show (i.e. Zumba).  A background in or passion for fitness or exercise is required. This coordinator should be keen to learn more about the activities under her management, able to effectively navigate their needs, be present during these activities, and be able to evaluate camper and staff engagement. This coordinator will have a prominent role during Staff Training week as she, with the assistance from the administration team, will be expected to plan her activity training curriculum for these activities. 

Program Coordinators

Camp TAW’s additional Program Coordinators report to Camp Ton-A-Wandah Administration Staff. While not directly responsible for managing and evaluating other staff members, they are responsible for  the execution of specific camp events. These coordinators do not live in cabins with campers (the Leader-In-Training Coordinator is the one exception). However, these coordinators  will interact with campers and staff daily and should be willing and able to engage in camp life beyond their specified responsibilities (i.e. sitting with campers during meal times, ensuring cabin coverage during shower time, etc). Additionally, these coordinators could be assigned to an age area to help support during evenings while on duty. Coordinators are typically over 21 years of age and preferably can drive. They will provide support to other leadership staff during training week and should be comfortable with public speaking.

Trips Coordinator 

Trips Coordinators work together to carry out prescheduled adventures throughout the camp sessions. Trips include  whitewater rafting, ziplining, hikes at The Carl Sandburg House, and more! Please note that certain offsite trips have limitations and requirements independent of Camp TAW requirements; the Trip Coordinators must be able to participate in all trips offered by these organizations (please click on below to determine if you meet these requirements). Trips Coordinators are the primary drivers for Camp TAW’s offsite Trips Program.  These women are typically at least 21 years of age, must be able to drive, are willing to learn to drive 15-passanger vans, and are eager for the excitement ahead.

Leaders In Training (LIT) Coordinators

Our LIT Coordinators lead up to 12 campers ages 16-17 years old in a 3-week leadership program. They work closely with the LIT director to plan and instruct leadership seminars, assist with activities, and plan programs and service projects with the LITs! They will help assign and oversee LITs work with sister cabins, support the counselors in those cabins to be mentors, and evaluate the LITs on their cabin counselor skills. LIT Coordinators co-facilitate and participate in overnight trips, including a trip to Ecuador first session, camping second session, and backpacking third session.. While not required, a lifeguard certification is preferred. They must be 21 and able to drive campers.  Unlike other coordinator positions, this individual will live in a cabin with campers.

Media Coordinator

TAW’s Media coordinator is responsible for taking pictures or coordinatoring the capturing of pictures for all camp programming and events. She uploads photos daily to the Camp InTouch Companion App and posts on social media platforms. The Media Coordinator  is responsible for creating and displaying Camp TAW’s slideshow at the end of each camp session and creating a yearbook to send to campers.  The Media Coordinator  also oversees the photography and newsletter activities for campers and will report to the Activity Director for these responsibilities. 

Session Head Staff

These women (typically camp alumni, moms, grandmothers, or aunts of campers) are responsible for assisting in the daily operations of each Cabin Area of Camp TAW (Hillside, Lakeside, and Hilltop). Under the direction of their Area Director, these duties include but are not limited to daily night checks, cabin cleanup inspection, shower duty, and helping run area specific programmatic events (i.e. camp fire and s’mores). In addition to their assigned roles in their Cabin Area, these women perform duties outside of their cabin area: conducting swimming and arts & crafts lessons, running Canteen, helping distribute cleaning supplies, managing table setting, assist with driving campers and counselors as necessary, and more! Unlike most full-summer coordinator positions, these women typically stay for a 3-week session. Session Head Staff do not live in a cabin with campers. 

Leaders in Training (LIT) program (formerly known as Counselor In Training) is designed for rising junior and senior girls. The program offers unique opportunities for young women to safely step out of their comfort zones and practice leadership skills applicable in any environment. Each session will be a combination of participating in traditional camp activities, focused leadership development, practicing camp counselor skills, and forming a strong bond within the LIT group. Skills are taught, practiced, and evaluated in a supportive community environment.

An LIT program will be offered in all three sessions. Program components consist of leadership skills workshops, CPR/First Aid certification, supervised time with younger sister cabins, activity lesson plan development and instruction assistance, planning an evening program, an outdoor or cultural education experience, and a group service project. Additionally, each session will have a different focus to push girls outside of their comfort zones and experientially learn leadership skills.

 Session 1 - Ecuador Experience 

LITs spend the first 9 days of the session at camp doing leadership development, camp activities, and preparing for Ecuador. They travel to Ecuador for 6 days for cultural immersion and to bring camp programming to kids in need, accruing ~50 service hours. They will return to camp to reflect and participate in the end of session activities.

Session 2 - Camp Deep-Dive

LITs this session will learn the ins and outs of running Camp TAW. They will spend focused time in each area of camp: kitchen, barn, activity areas, office, programs, cabin life, etc. There will be at least one overnight camping trip and off camp excursions. LITs will participate in service work in the local community, as well as design and implement a service project for camp, accruing ~10-20 service hours.

Session 3 - Adventure Learning

LITs will experience a variety of adventures, both on and off camp, throughout the session to stretch themselves in new ways. They will participate in white water rafting, climbing, rappelling, zip lining, and a multi-day backpacking trip. LITs will design and implement a service project that enhances adventure opportunities for others, accruing ~10-20 service hours.

Many LIT’s are lifelong TAW campers who are familiar with the camp’s core values, traditions, and daily routine. For others, it may be their first experience coming to Camp Ton-A-Wandah. No matter which way you come, the LIT Program offers a fantastic opportunity for those interested in developing their skills as leaders and role models. What better way to do that than at camp with other open-minded individuals!

There are many opportunities to be involved at Camp Ton-A-Wandah outside of being a camper or counselor.  Our alumnae are in the unique position to be women of character role models for campers and staff at camp.  We need you!  Below are specific opportunties for you spread, and recieve, TAW love at camp.

Lead New Camper Tours 

Tours are offered the day before opening day so new parents and campers can see all of camp and ask general questions. Alumnae make the best tour guides because they know and love camp!  This also allows staff to focus on preparing for opening day.

• Saturday, July 18th (12:00pm - 3:30pm)

Alumnae Sundays

Sundays have always been a special day at camp.  Sleeping in and waking to "Morning Has Broken," breakfast in pajamas, swim meet, canoe meet, fried chicken lunch, chapel, and special programs.  Come join us for a Sunday and help make it happen!  You can even come with a small group of camp buddies and create your own mini-reunion in Western NC, spending one day at camp!  It will be limited 8 alumna each week.  

What to Expect:

• Arrive after breakfast (Jesse will coordinate with you if need a different arrival time)

• Be involved in canoe or swim meet as a judge or even participate on an alumna team

• Enjoy the famous Haynes family Fried Chicken lunch and Ice Cream Sundays! You will be welcomed by campers and staff and sing along to your favorite camp songs.

• Spend Happy Nappy time preparing for Chapel, walking around camp, or find your own quiet place of solace for reflection.

• Speak at Chapel.  We rely on one featured alumna to give the weekly talk, and invite other alumnae as speakers, lead songs, or simply be present.
